The Ministry of Road and Highway Transportation has established a framework to classify national roads into parameters such as traffic density and proximity to existing national highways.

Once a national highway has been declared a national highway, the central government services assume responsibility for maintenance and maintenance.

The government is preparing a plan to identify national highways that will be declared national highways when they begin a major road network update.

The Ministry of Road and Highway Transportation has established a framework to classify national roads into parameters such as traffic density and proximity to existing national highways. "Each road will receive a rating according to a fixed criteria and will then be approved," a government official told ET.

Once a national highway has been declared a national highway, the central government services assume responsibility for maintenance and maintenance.

The center generally declares national roads as national roads when it receives proposals from national governments. But now the government wants to have a certain criterion for a more efficient national highway network and address the problem of excessive change of national roads as national highways.

"Ultimately, we have to move to a smaller network by adopting national roads as national roads," said a second official who requested anonymity.

Currently, the government maintains a distance of 50 km between each national road. According to the proposed plan, priority roads to a national highway have priority.

The first official said that the draft framework proposal would soon be sent to Niti Aayog for further consultation.

Experts say the government should also analyze the investment potential of the areas before they are classified as roads. "It seems like a sensible way to set priorities, especially given the bandwidth and project management limitations that may exist," says Manish Agarwal, leading capital infrastructure and projects at PwC India.

While national roads are classified as national roads, the government should also prioritize connectivity to places with strong investment potential, Agarwal added.
